Not that it matters much, but Mr. Craig Harris of IGN, apparently checked out the WiiSpeak microphone and voice chat functionality inside Animal Crossing at Nintendo's San Francisco office.
Since E3, the reception quality has supposedly become better. During its examination conversations came in clearly enough from multiple positions in the room, though there was a drop in quality whenever interlocutors drifted far away from the mic. Harris was easy conversing in a normal speaking voice from his position "six to eight feet" away. Besides, there was a "Use Headphones" option around, with a somewhat shadowy purpose. A good speculation is that the option splits the audio channels, or some preset audio settings to optimize performance through tiny speakers. Which in any case goes incompatible with the WiiMote.
